For most of us going on vacation is an event we look forward to with great anticipation. A study in 2002 revealed the average American takes 4.6 vacation trips per year. While the destination (cruise or whatever) sounds delightful, we all dislike the process of traveling there and the travel returning home. We all look forward to the time when we can 'beam ourselves there' like the heroes of Star Trek.
Since we are in the heaviest travel season of the year, here’s a checklist of ways to make travel less stressful and more comfortable.

If your trip involves sitting for extended periods of time (like international air travel, or domestic car travel), takes you into different time zones, or foreign cultures these tips will help you adapt more quickly on arrival:
- Stretch frequently and move about to restore circulation enroute
- Avoid alcohol en-route (interrupts normal sleep patterns)
- Drink plenty of bottled water (travel is dehydrating)
- The first night, go to bed at your regular bedtime regardless of the local time. Adjust the second night.
- Eat only 'safe foods' from safe restaurants and hotels (avoid street vendors)
- Try to keep as much of your regular daily routine as you can. I.e. eating times, exercise, hours of sleep.
If you follow these simple rules, travel can be more enjoyable and you’ll arrive ready to make the most of your vacation.
